“In a vast, sandy desert, in the middle of a searing hot summer, I became the country’s first outdoor salesman,” says Dr. Shetty. Going from clinic to clinic selling drugs to doctors, loading cartons, hoisting 5-gallon barrels on his shoulder up staircases was his first idea of working in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi. He soon noticed the deficiency for basic clinics in the region and with his strong business acumen and consumer insight, he set up New Medical Centre – a small pharmacy diagnostic clinic. After that, there was no looking back. He was blessed with tremendous success and soon hospitals began sprouting across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Al Ain.
From these humble beginnings, NMC has today become the largest healthcare provider in the region with over 140 facilities across 14 countries, over 18,000 employees including 3,000 doctors treating over 8.5 million patients annually. NMC was the first healthcare company from the region to list on the London Stock Exchange and is part of the FTSE100 index with a market capitalization more than USD 10 billion. Recently, NMC got inducted to an exquisite club of MSCI Global Index.
